In a survey of dermatology residency programs, 89% cited the personal statement as a factor in selecting applicants to interview.

A particularly important question to answer in the statement is "Why are you interested in pursuing a career in in dermatology? In our free E-Document "Why Dermatology", we share the reasons why dermatologists chose to enter the field.

1. "In lieu of a personal statement, we require responses to these three questions," writes the Department of Dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School:

  • What distinguishes you from the next applicant?

  • What will UT Southwestern Medical Center provide you that other dermatology programs will not?

  • At the end of your career, what do you want to be remembered for?

2. "Because we have a limited number of interview slots, it would be helpful to include why you are interested in the Austin program in your personal statement," writes the Department of Dermatology at the UT Austin Dell Medical School.

3. "Personal statement, please include reason why you want to train at University Hospitals," writes the Department of Dermatology at Case Western University.
