Observerships and Externships for International Medical Students (Currently Enrolled)
Alabama
The University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine allows international medical students in their final year of training (or those who have completed one year of core clerkships) to rotate through their institution for up to eight weeks. Electives are available in physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, and subspecialties of internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery.
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
Arizona
The University of Arizona College of Medicine does not permit international medical students and graduates to rotate through their institution unless the applicant is sponsored by a faculty member.
California
The Keck School of Medicine of USC does offer visiting electives to international medical students. Howevery, you must be attending one of their affiliated institutions. Please see link for a list of affiliated institutions.
Loma Linda University School of Medicine
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
Stanford School of Medicine
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the Stanford School of Medicine. However, according to the school's website, that may change in the near future.
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the UC Davis School of Medicine.
The UC Irvine School of Medicine does offer visiting electives to international medical students. Howevery, you must be attending a medical school that has an exchange agreement in place with UC Irvine. Please see link for a list of these institutions.
The UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine does offer visiting electives to international medical students. Howevery, you must be attending a medical school that has an exchange agreement in place with UCLA.
The UCSD School of Medicine does offer visiting electives to international medical students. Howevery, the school indicates that there are only a limited number of positions available.
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the UCSF School of Medicine.
Colorado
The University of Colorado School of Medicine does not permit international medical students and graduates to rotate through their institution unless the applicant is sponsored by a faculty member. Once sponsored, students may elect to complete rotations in anesthesiology, emergency medicine (toxicology), internal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, and surgery.
Connecticut
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. However, according to the school's website, this policy is currently under review. Applicants are encouraged to visit the school's website using the link to the left for any change in policy.
District of Columbia
The George Washington University School of Medicine does offer visiting electives to international medical students. Howevery, you must be attending a medical school that has an exchange agreement in place with George Washington University. Please see link for a list of these institutions.
Florida
The FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine permits international medical students to rotate through their institution. Electives are available in emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, plastic surgery, radiology, and otolaryngology.
The University of Florida College of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students at the Jacksonville and Gainesville campuses.
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but students are only allowed to function as observers.
Georgia
The Emory University School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students.
Augusta University

At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the Medical College of Georgia.
The Mercer University School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students attending accredited schools in the Caribbean.
Hawaii
Although the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine does not offer rotations for international medical students, the school offers several programs for international visiting students, including a Learning Clinical Reasoning Workshop, Summer Medical Education Institute, and SimTiki Simulation Center.
Iowa
The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine does offer visiting electives to international medical students. Howevery, you must be attending a medical school that has an exchange agreement in place with the University of Iowa (see link for list of these institutions).
Illinois
The University of Illinois College of Medicine does offer visiting electives to international medical students. Howevery, preference is given to those students attending a medical school that is affiliated with the University of Ilinois (see link for list of these institutions).
The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but on a limited basis.
The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending either the Ben Gurion or Sackler School of Medicine.
The Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending a school that participates in the Global Health Learning Opportunities (GHLO) program.
The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending a school that is a Global Partner of Northwestern University. Please see the link for a list of these institutions.
Indiana
The Indiana University School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending a school that is an affiliate of Indiana University.
Kansas
The University of Kansas School of Medicine permits international medical students to rotate through their institution. Electives are available in dermatology, internal medicine, neurology, gynecologic oncology, otolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, and surgery.
Kentucky
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the University of Louisville because of personnel issues. This may change in the near future, and applicants are encouraged to visit the school's website periodically to stay current on the policy.
Louisiana
The LSU Shreveport School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students.
The Tulane University School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending schools which have existing contracts with Tulane University. See the link for a list of these schools.
Maryland
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending schools which have a formal relationship with Johns Hopkins. See the link for a list of these schools.
Massachussetts
The Boston University School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending a school that participates in the Global Health Learning Opportunities (GHLO) program.

The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School offers rotations for international medical students attending either Ross University School of Medicine or Saint George's University School of Medicine.
New Mexico
The University of New Mexico School of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students.
New York
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine offers rotations for international medical students who are pre-approved with one of Einstein's established student exchange programs.
The Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons offers rotations for international medical students but only to students attending a school on Columbia's approved list. See the link for a list of these institutions.

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai offers rotations for international medical students.

The SUNY Upstate Medical University offers rotations for international medical students on a limited basis but only to students attending a school that has a formal affiliation agreement with SUNY Upstate.

North Carolina

The Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University does offer rotations for international medical students.

Rhode Island
At the present time, foreign medical students are not permitted to complete visiting electives at the Brown University Alpert School of Medicine. However, according to the school's website, that may change in the near future.
Tennessee
The University of Tennessee College of Medicine does offer rotations for international medical students.
The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine does offer rotations for international medical students. There are four schools which have a reciprocal relationship with Vanderbilt University, and students attending one of these schools may apply for clinical electives. Students attending other medical schools may also be eligible but they must first be nominated by Vanderbilt faculty.
Texas
The Baylor College of Medicine does offer rotations for international medical students but only for students attending schools that are part of the AAMC GHLO Program. See the link for more infomation.
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston does offer rotations for international medical students but only for students attending either the Instituto de Medicina Tropical or Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
The University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio does offer rotations for international medical students.
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School does offer rotations for international medical students.
Washington
The University of Washington School of Medicine does not permit international medical students to rotate through their institution unless the applicant is sponsored by a faculty member.
West Virginia
The University of West Virginia School of Medicine does offer rotations for international medical students.
